Death Comes Without Warning. A poem by Steve Higgins
Переглядів 82 місяці тому
Death Comes Without Warning Death comes without warning; it steals your life away. It takes away your loved ones, and the lights of your day. Death comes silently; it stabs you in the back, It reaches round behind you, then comes in for the attack Death comes slowly; it reaches for your throat It overwhelms you; it chokes you, before you’ve had time to put on your coat. Death comes quickly, it ...

Do The Best You Can a poem by Steve Higgins Nothing can be heard but the ticking of the clock The judge sits in judgement and I’m standing in the dock. He asks;’ what have you done with your life? What progress have you made?’ Well, I say, I was born and raised in a council house I went to school and I went to work I’ve breathed the air and felt the rays of the sun And I’ve shivered in the cold...

A Quick Look around Gatley
Переглядів 332Рік тому
A quick wander around Gatley from the perspective of someone who moved away from the area and has just returned. I remember Gatley in the late 60s and early 70s and follow me around the village as I see how things have changed. Remember the Griddle and Grill? The Red Lion? At least the Horse and Farrier and Prince of wales are still there.
The One You Used To Be. A Poem by Steve Higgins
Переглядів 12Рік тому
The One You Used To Be I want you to be The one you used to be Bright and fresh And forever drinking tea I want you back again The one you used to be Bright and bold I want you back with me It breaks my heart to see you now Not the one you used to be Now your thoughts are dulled with age I wish I could set you free I’ll always remember you as you were The one you used to be But I’ll be here for...

The Ghost in My Car
Переглядів 14Рік тому
The Ghost in My Car I sometimes find my Dad sitting next to me in my car Not exactly him but some likeness, a ghost from afar. I can’t exactly see him clear But either way it’s nice to have him near I’ll tell him stuff about my life And he nods and makes positive sounds I can’t exactly hear him But either way it’s nice to have him around I glance over towards him When we’re stopped at the traff...
Castaway a poem by Steve Higgins
Переглядів 19Рік тому
Castaway Cast me away on a sea of dreams And let me float away I’ll be back later on Sometime today Cast me away on a sea of thoughts And let me drift away I’ll explore my inner workings and try to find A little peace of mind Cast me away from living people Let me walk among the dead I’ll hear their stories from the past: Thoughts and dreams and memories that last Cast me away on a desert islan...

80a cars, 80s planes, 80s music. Does it get any better? 😍
Before VOSA and before the tacho-card menace arrived it was a lot freer in those days, but tougher graft. Mind you i think driver's mates were a more common thing in trucking in those days weren't they?
You'd be picked up by a jobsworth these days for this laid back approach.
Drive right passed my home town, the top oak was a great pub back in the day
I seem to remember the bus depot being built in the late 60s, was it named Daw Bank or something? There were still some of the Stockport Corporation Leyland Titan PD2s in red then in the SELNEC colours The Atlanteans were also introduced with the SELNEC colours, then later GM. It's great that you showed us inside the depot. There's no full view of the viaduct now, which has always been the focal point of the town. It's surprised me how much has and will be changed. I'm surprised that the Metrolink had not got through to the interchange, though. Many thanks for this video showing.
Hi and thanks for looking in. The bus depot is in Daw Bank, I should have mentioned that in the video. Back in 79 when I worked there we actually had two depots. On a split shift we sometimes had to jump on a staff bus and go up to Charles St which I think was the old north western depot. At the time they had a lot of the old back loader buses there. We all hated those Charles st shifts but the good thing was that the busmens club was there so in the afternoon when the bus was returned to Charles St you could pop in for a quick pint while you waited for the staff bus back to Daw Bank. All the best
Thank you for your comment. I think it's great to hear of a driver's recollections on GM Buses.
Amazing to see this. My first holiday abroad was in 1986 when I was 7yo. Flew on Orion to faro
Cheers Steve, thanks for looking in 😊
I remember cycling down that 1 in 10 hill. I think its blocked off now.
Yes, tried to get to it last year but like you say, it was all blocked off
02:36 BRS now that is a blast from the past remember seeing those trailers growing up with my grandad in the early 90s going round the country in his artic, the good old days man, good memories I’ll take to the grave. I always thought I’d be a lorry driver but nah under paid and over worked, no life, now every company wants you working away all week while your wife sits at home with the kids. My grandad for sure worked his bollocks off doing 13 to 16 hour days but he was home 3 or 4 days of the week.
Great vid. Any footage of T1 and T1A late 80’s / early 90’s? Thanks
I’ve only got this one video, split into 2 parts, here’s pt 1 and there’s a link to pt2. Filmed in 86 if I remember correctly ua-cam.com/video/GwHEpd0TsRk/v-deo.htmlsi=j-4f8NG6qJ6TyFma

Thanks for looking in Peter. 😀
Hii sir love from India
Sending love back from the UK
Collins and AZ street maps yippee
No sat nav in those days!
Haha the old frisby tacho
What a life it was.... across the water..... back again.CB radios... forget your tacho .... foreign truckstops... showers!..Lokeren in Holland.DAF or Transcontinental. Holland duck...all gone now 😭😭😭
Happier times before deregulation.
Love the old taachoes
Any pics or footage from oulton from mid to late 80's of a lotus esprit v8? Believe it was driven by Chris Crawford
Take a look at my Flickr page. There’s a few Esprit’s there, not sure if they are the one you want www.flickr.com/gp/steve_higgins/B157cq66g2
I wonder how the new drivers of today would like driving pre taut liners, sat navs. I was in the office getting my keys and manifest a new driver one week experience came in complained "I'm not taking that thing out,it's not got a fridge. Oh diddums I said i been trucking for 25 years and had my fridge on my passenger seat. When i first started trucking i had a 22 year old Leyland not auto, splitter boxes, no radio, no auxiliary plugs, no night heater, using public phone boxes, roping & sheeting in ice cold wet weather oh the good old days.
Good old days before too much wire "safety" fencing! - Thank's for the re-edit!
Thanks for looking in. I did have a commentary recorded but I thought the end result was better without it. Cheers, Steve
😒 Promo`SM
Glad ive found this vid again
"Look ! That's Concorde !" "Is it ? - How can you tell ?"
There is a shrine to the air accident in 1985 besides the runway.
I doubt they would publish the details of a plane's airline, destination and departure time for anyone to look at these days.
Its shit & not worth it anymore. Too many rules & the mad man changing highway code so now we are the lowest of the low on the road, cpc shit forced on us by the eu criminals. Tok many dangerous arsholes on our roads. For gods sake don't ever think of driving hgv's in this shig assed country.
Soon be Friday 🖐️
Yep, ready to start that countdown!
Great vid - really gives an impression of what aviation used to be like
Thanks for looking in Finlay. Don’t forget to watch part 2, I wasn’t able to upload the whole video all in one. Best wishes, Steve
Were there any flights to the USA from Manchester during those years? *Edit:* 15:22 is my answer
I’m not sure. There were certainly flights to Canada. Steve, who would undoubtedly have known is sadly no longer with us
Thanks guys for uploading this video, a fantastic watch! Made me feel nostalgic for times gone by.
Hey, thanks for watching. Don’t forget to check out part 2! 😀
Hello Steve with a soul 🍄
Thanks Martin
Beautiful camera
1986 was the first year we fl Flew to the USA. We flew British Airways from the new terminal gate on the day it opened.i think it was called the satellite gate but I could be wrong. Happy days.
Hi, thanks for looking in and commenting 😀
Good times good lads sit wages ,fast trucks and no visa wnkers
Retired now with bad ticker ,i drove everything everywhere and boy did we laugh great nights out at regular haunts , I had a 2800 dad that wd do 85mph ,worked for s and w garages of Atherton I only had to pull up at traffic lights and the fuse would jump out on its own 🤫
A 2800 Daf will do 68 MPH and no more. If you mess with the pump to get more revs the engine won't last pissing time. I've known loads of smart asses on the roadside with blown engines😂
@@seamusburke9101 well Seamus ,your wrong the pump was wound up and the engine lasted 4 yrs with me then sold in running order, our firm was well known by lots of guys ,and owner drivers who ran with us ,it had the 4over 4 box with a coach diff as ordered by the boss , I'm not here to argue and you have the right to yr opinion , I don't need to make up stories as have lots of true ones and witnesses
What a great follow up Steve. I really loved your original 1986 video! I was born in 1986 but had a 10 year career at Manchester airport from 2005-2015 as a flight dispatcher. It is unreal how much it has changed especially since 1986 when you filmed it back then. I can't help but feel the airport has lost its charm and the feeling you once got when going there! You should of took a stroll down Ringway Road / Airport pub towards T3 where the old village of HeyHead once was with Fullaloves shop that was at the end of the old Woodhouse Lane. Again not recognisable today. Thanks again for the vid
Thanks Riggy7. I did plan to do more but had a number of camera disasters. I tried to get down Mill lane but it looks like it’s not accessible anymore unless by foot, there seems to be a footpath where the road used to be. The airport hotel was on my list to visit too, might have to do a part 2 next year. Thanks for looking in
Nice video!!
Thanks for looking in John 🤓
“Littered” Somehow doesn’t seem the correct word to describe the final resting places of these brave souls who sacrificed everything for us.
You are right. Poor choice of word on my part. Hope you found the rest of the commentary more respectful. Try to watch the edited version where I cut out superfluous stuff about the motorhome
better than a sat nav a local with lane knowledge
now theres one of them magical things that shows you where to go but does not tell ya to turn left in 300 yards great to hear the CB chatter
This is absolutley fantastic!! What a great video of the years gone by
Thanks Riggy7, glad you enjoyed it!
Believe it or not Harrison Ford was seen driving a canal boat a couple of months ago I don't know where though
All the stars end up in Manchester . .
I'd be surprised if the pub the Deansgate didn't reopen with all the money moving in but not as a pub probably wine or cocktail bar
Hope not although I can see it happening
@@SteveHigginsWriterBloggerPoet they don't want the working class in the city centre anymore getting pushed further out like London

Hi Steve, enjoyed watching this mate. I too worked in Manchester in the 80’s and 90’s , I don’t often go now but interested to see what has changed .
Thanks for looking in. I love the city centre and generally it’s changed for the better, although I’m sure plenty would disagree
Very nice watch happy memories
Love it ❤️❤️❤️
